What Counts as a UK Betting Site

“UK betting sites” is a wide phrase. It covers various products that work in genuinely different ways, and a company licensed to run one of them is not automatically any good at the rest. A sportsbook prices up an outcome and takes the other side of your bet. What makes one legitimate is the licence behind it. Any site taking bets from Britain has to hold one from the UK Gambling Commission, and holding it obliges the company to verify who you are, keep customer money apart from its own, publish the rules before you stake, and hand you deposit limits, timeouts and self-exclusion whenever you ask for them. Above that baseline the differences are real, but narrower than the advertising suggests. The margin built into the odds is what betting somewhere actually costs you. Casino Sites

Casino games are played against the house, and the edge sits inside the game rather than being set by the site you play it on. A licence is what makes that edge knowable. The UK Gambling Commission requires the games to be tested by an approved independent house before they go live, the return to player figure to be findable in the game’s own information, and the conditions attached to a bonus to be shown before you opt in rather than after. Poker Sites

Poker is the other product on this page where the operator is not your opponent. It takes a cut of each pot and has no interest in who wins, which puts the integrity problem in an unusual place: the risk is not the house, it is the other seats. Betting Exchanges

An exchange does not take your bet. It matches you against another customer and charges commission on what you win, which makes it a different regulated activity from bookmaking rather than a different flavour of it. That is a different product with a different risk attached, not a worse one.

Matchbook is an exchange in the strict sense: you are matched against another customer, and the site takes a commission on what you win instead of shading the price. Deposits and Withdrawals
